Is the MLM model right for you?
Are you hunting the right business model? If you don’t have your own product, or even if you have a product or service in mind but don’t have the necessary cash to set yourself up, read about network marketing. It might be right for you. Why Network Marketing? 1. By its nature network marketing, which involves word-of-mouth, is the most successful sales model 2. Network marketing produces the most loyal customer base. 3. You earn an income based on the efforts of many; not just your own. 4. It is the most efficient way to take a product or service from the point of manufacture or creation to the customer. 5. Residual income. If you are currently employed or operating your own business or franchise, what happens at the end of the day? Your income stops. In network marketing, your income continues, whether you’re working or not. That is because somewhere in your downline, while you are sitting down to dinner, someone else is explaining your business and closing the deal. I had a small epiphany when I heard John Deighton say: “most Americans are part-time workers and fulltime spenders.” He explained if you are not at work then you are not generating an income. But if you are paying a mortgage or rent, paying for a car, paying for electricity and a host of other bills, then you are spending 24 hours a day. Network marketing allows you to generate a fulltime income. And there is no better way to run a 24-hour, 7-day a week business, with little overhead and no employee costs than taking the MLM online. Using internet marketing you are no longer tied to a geographic location. We’ve all heard the horror stories of 97% failure rates. Maybe you’re carrying around your own MLM scars. I ask you to suspend disbelief and put what you think you know about the MLM industry on hold.
Most people’s journey into network marketing begins the same way. They see a presentation that includes a “pyramid” of circles on a tear sheet. You are told that top circle represents you. The lines leading down the paper from your circle to other circles represent your downline. Pretty soon that page is full of circles. I attended a presentation this afternoon. The speaker was trying to convince his audience that his service was free. It was not. But based on the service being free, he claimed that most business people would sign up for it. They would not. He went on to say that if you joined and recruited 5 other business people in the first month and each one of them recruited 5 more people their first month, by the end of your fifth month you would have 3,125 people in your downline! It was the old MLM model aimed at greed that emerged in the 60s. Trust me, anyone who gets into this business focused on building a monster downline is headed for disaster. He or she doesn't understand business nor the MLM model. MLMs attract people from all walks of life: no experience necessary. That is both the strength and weakness of network marketing. While anyone can get into an MLM, not everyone will be successful. At the basis of every MLM is selling products or services and recruitment. You need sales skills to accomplish that. Without real sales skills you would have to be selling life preservers to a drowning man in order to make a sale on your own. Many MLMs offer products that are readily available at the local supermarket and cost less. Some people may accept that your vitamins or organic juice is superior to what is available locally, but the majority won’t care. They’ve lived their entire lives without your product. If your company offers a service, it is likely your customer will not see how that service could improve his life. Because of the bad publicity that well-known MLMs have suffered, many people won’t even listen to your opportunity. And because most of your friends and family have an employee outlook, they cannot envision themselves at the helm of their own home business and you should not be trying to sponsor them. In addition to sales, you need to know marketing—who to approach with your opportunity and where to find them. Perhaps your sponsor swooped in and helped you close the deals with your first recruits. But does he or she continue to participate? No. They are now helping some other new recruit get started with their downline. Why? Because your sponsor dreams of 1000 recruits in his or her downline that will result in that 6-figure income that everyone wants. Your sponsor believes the company line that recruiting is the only way to accomplish this. Which brings us to the third important skill every network marketing team must have: mentoring that comes from leadership. To be a successful network marketer you need skills in sales, marketing and leadership. This is the first of a 5-part series about succeeding in the MLM home business model in the 21st century.
